RIP Levi Stubbs, lead singer of the Four Tops. Along with the Beatles, the Monkees, and Tommy James The Shondells, the Tops were the guys pretty much constantly on my little portable 45rpm player Iapos;d carry from room to room in my childhood home.

Hearing their songs always flashes me back to toystrewn childhood greenygold summers, and especially the blazing sun, slurping low brownish-grey waves, crumbling boardwalks, and searing glass-flaked sand of the south New Jersey shore which to a little kid was heaven those rare times we could afford to escape peeA.

Even on a most miserable day, "I Canapos;t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)" will never fail to make me smile, and "Just Ask The Lonely" still makes me cry every time.
